The “ancient hours”, in use for over 2000 years until the fall
of the Roman Empire, divided the diurnal day into twelve equal
parts. Hours had varying lengths: longer during summer by a
maximum of 15 minutes on the day of the solstice (June 21st),
and shorter by a maximum of 17 minutes on the day of the winter
solstice (December 22nd). |
