Mosaic sundial

Museo della Civiltà Contadina del Friuli Imperiale (Sundials courtyard)

Photo n° 4

The inclined solar clock, is made up of a mosaic on a prefabricated concrete base, is a rare example of “Ancient hours” solar clocks, used during the Roman Empire.

The hour indicated corresponds to the twelfth part of the diurnal arch, which starts at dawn; this is also called the “Unequal hour”: the width constantly changes because it is directly linked to dawn and sunset.
