Engraving the elements of a sundial on marble is surely the most durable solution in order to resist to the inclemency of the weather and therefore to time. In the past, the groove engraved in the marble was punctured in various points and then filled with melted lead, to give better visibility to the lines.

Today the lead has been substituted by coloured resins which should grant longer duration.
